Rearden Steel Technologies, a start-up founded in January 2000 by WebTV creator Steve Perlman, has landed $67 million in venture funding from high-tech luminaries including America Online, Cisco Systems and EchoStar Communications. Although a spokeswoman for Rearden said it is not yet ready to release details about its "home entertainment" products, she did allow that they are designed for mass market consumers. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company is developing a central server that would allow consumers to send and receive information within the home from numerous devices, including TVs, stereos and computers. Rearden's executives and staff include veterans from companies such as AMD, Apple, Cisco, Microsoft, Pinnacle Micro, Sony, ReplayTV, Thomson and TiVo. Rearden's other backers include Mayfield, Vulcan Ventures, the Barksdale Group, the Washington Post Co. and Macromedia Ventures. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Rearden employs more than 100. Company founder Perlman left WebTV in 1999, four years after co-founding the company, and two years after WebTV was acquired by Microsoft.
